The body of a missing 14-year-old girl was found about 700 feet below the Horseshoe Bend overlook in northern Arizona on Monday, the Coconino County Sheriff's Office said.
The office said family members reported the girl missing about 4 p.m., about two hours after they last saw her at the overlook near Page.
A sheriff search and rescue team joined the Arizona Department of Public Safety's air rescue unit to search the area, the Sheriff's Office said.
A crew on the Department of Public Safety helicopter found the girl's body about 700 feet below the overlook, officials said.
Because it was getting dark, rescuers were not able to recover her body Monday evening. Rescuers returned Tuesday and recovered her body about 10 a.m.
The girl's body was taken to the Coconino County Medical Examiner's Office in Flagstaff, the Sheriff's Office said.
An initial investigation indicated the death was from an accidental fall, but the investigation is continuing and the Medical Examiner's Office will review the case, officials said.
This would not be the first time someone has fallen from the overlook. On May 6 a man fell about 800 feet off the overlook to his death. In 2010, a Greek tourist also fell to his death.
A viewing deck with safety rails opened June 19, providing tourists with a safer way to view the canyon. However, tourists can still explore the ledge freely.
